Stepping Off Media (SoM) was born from a simple belief: the stories that matter most are often the ones least likely to be told.
Rooted in Brooklyn, New York, SoM was founded to give voice to communities and perspectives that have long been overlooked by mainstream cinema. We don't chase trends. We chase truth — the kind that lives on the block, in the neighborhood, in the faces of people just trying to make their way through the world.
Our story began in a video store in Fort Greene, Brooklyn — a corner of New York that in the early 1990s was electric with creative energy. Artists, musicians, filmmakers, dreamers. It was a neighborhood that knew it was something special, even as the world around it was changing fast.
That energy sparked our debut feature, Stepping Off with Juvey-D. Shot on the streets of Fort Greene in 1992, the footage sat undiscovered for thirty years before being found, finished, and brought to life. What began as a boy's adventure became an award-winning film.
